Though the current university was established in 2007, our history goes all the way back to 1882. We were formed by the merger of St Martin's College, the Cumbria Institute of the Arts and the University of Central Lancashire's Cumbria sites, giving us a firm foundation in providing excellent academic opportunities for our students. Our Histor The University of Cumbria is a public university in Cumbria, with its headquarters in Carlisle and other major campuses in Lancaster, Ambleside, and London. It opened its doors in 2007, and has roots extending back to the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts, established in 1822, and the teacher training college established by Charlotte Mason in the 1890s The only UK university with a base in a national park, the University of Cumbria is one of Britain's newest public universities. Launched just over a decade ago, the institution has over 10,000 students enrolled. The university offers courses in STEM subjects, social sciences, sports sciences, humanities, business and economy University of Cumbria is working with the Government's Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to host on campus testing. We believe this enables us to directly support the fight against the transmission of Covid-19 for our students, our staff and our wider communities.
